What the media says about me...

"Paul Flynn and Gordon Prentice have become this Parliament’s saltiest select committee interrogators. They have been consistent value for money, pulling apart a succession of crooks, con men and blue-sky pseuds."

The cost of decommissioning Britain’s older nuclear power stations has soared to over £73 billion and is still rising according to Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice.

The MP called today for an urgent debate on the runaway costs of cleaning up the early generations of Britain’s nuclear power stations, pointing to a highly critical report, published today by the influential Commons Public Accounts Committee.

The Committee said that estimates made between 2005 and 2007 of decommissioning costs expected to be incurred between April 2008 and March 2013 had skyrocketed by 41%.

The MP told the Commons that a decision was expected tomorrow on which private sector company would get the £1 billion a year contract to clean up Sellafield.

Speaking afterwards, the MP said: “Nuclear power leaves a costly and toxic legacy. Cleaning up radioactive waste costs an absolute fortune.”
