The number of unemployed people in Pendle claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in January 2010 was 2,168. This represents a rate of 5.4% of the economically active population, the 329th highest of the 646 UK constituencies.

The number of Pendle people claiming JSA is 81 higher than in December 2009.

Local MP, Gordon Prentice, commented: “Everyone knows we are in the middle of a deep global recession triggered by the worldwide crisis in the financial sector. We were hit hard because our financial sector is much bigger than in comparable economies. Despite this, unemployment here is lower than in many of our competitor countries.”

“The Conservatives originally promised “savage cuts” to cut the deficit but they are now modifying their position on this as on so many other policy areas.”

The MP continued: “There is no depth to so many Conservative policies. Under scrutiny they become very flaky indeed.”

The House of Commons library research paper, Unemployment by Constituency, will be published later on the internet at the following link:http://www.parliament.uk/commons/lib/research/rp2010/rp10-013.pdf
