The car scrappage scheme, which has had a large take up in the area, has been extended until the end of March.  This allows more time for people to cash in on the deal, which discounts the price of a new car by £2,000 if they trade-in a car over ten years old.

The MP commented: “I'm pleased to see that the scheme has been taken up by so many people, and I would urge people who are still keen on taking part to get their orders in as soon as possible, as time is running out.”

With one of the highest take ups in the Britain, the scheme has been responsible for a fifth of all new car registrations in the country since its introduction.”

“Speaking to local car dealers I am told that up to 50% of all new car sales are cashing in on the scheme. This is good news for manufacturers, dealers and customers

"There is also an added benefit to the environment, as new cars are much greener.”

Notes to editors:  The government set up the scheme with a quota for 400,000 cars currently there have been 330,000 people taking up the scheme, with 70,000 more needed to achieve the goal.
