The start of the Department of Energy’s scrappage scheme that gives households in England £400 off the cost of a new boiler has been welcomed by Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice. As well as reducing CO2 emissions and supporting thousands of jobs, the scheme can help households cut their energy bills by over £200 a year. There are about 3.5 million homes in England with the least efficient types of boilers. Speaking from Westminster, the MP said: “All eligible householders in Pendle should consider taking advantage of the scheme. To qualify, households need to have a working G-rated boiler. It is likely to be G-rated if it is more than 15 years old and gas fired. A permanent pilot-light is also a good indicator.” “If the boiler is oil-fired and more than 25 years old, it is likely to be eligible.” “Energy companies are expected to use the scheme to drum up business. Some are even planning to match the government’s £400 discount.” The MP added: “These new schemes will complement the government’s Warm Front grant scheme which has already helped over 9,000 vulnerable households across Pendle with energy efficiency measures.” “On top of that, Pendle Borough Council’s Home Energy team manages a number of schemes to help households get the best advice and the maximum support to improve their energy efficiency. Discounts and grants are available to all privately owned homes, to improve roof and wall insulation and for anyone replacing an old boiler, not just the elderly or those in receipt of benefits. Pendle Council also has a novel initiative to lend householders a Home Energy Monitor free of charge for a month. These devices show people how much energy they are using and what it costs. This in turn can lead to more efficient use of energy and cost savings.” Note to Editors: further details on the scrappage scheme are available from The Pendle Home Energy Services team can be contacted on 01282 661026 or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
