Local MP, Gordon Prentice, has welcomed new rules which come into force this week which clamp down on parking enforcement companies.

From now on, these companies will be unable to get information from the DVLA unless they are members of an accredited trade association and abide by its rules.

Speaking from Westminster, the MP said: "We have had terrible problems in the past with rogue parking enforcement companies intimidating innocent motorists and threatening them with huge fines unless they paid up."

"For too long, the authorities seemed powerless to act against these cowboys."

"Now it's time to drive them out of town for good."

"UPDATE - NEW DATA RELEASE RULES FOR PARKING COMPANIES"

We informed you in August of new rules that were to be introduced for parking enforcement companies that request vehicle keeper details from DVLA.

From today, 23 November 2009, DVLA requires all companies requesting information from DVLA, whether manually or electronically, to enforce parking restrictions on private property, to be a member of a DVLA Accredited Trade Assocation (ATA).

In addition, by 22 February 2010, these companies will need to demonstrate full compliance with the ATA's Code of Practice. This includes, amongst other things, the requirement to provide appropriate signage so that motorists are clear about the parking restrictions in place.

These extra safeguards will further protect the personal information of Britain's motorists.

THE RULES ARE CLEAR: NO ATA MEMBERSHIP = NO INFORMATION
