Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, has pledged to support the innovative environmental projects across East Lancashire being undertaken by the local Pennine Lancashire Groundwork. Groundwork is a not-for-profit enterprise that is commissioned to redevelop environmental areas to a high standard and good design. At a recent meeting in Nelson, Nick Riley, Groundwork’s Special Projects Director, brought the MP up to date with local projects as well as important changes resulting from the co-operative working of East Lancashire local authorities under the Pennine Lancashire umbrella arrangement. The MP is a past President of the Lancashire Business Environment Association - the business arm of Groundwork - and has for many years been an honorary member of the Institute of Landscape Gardeners. The MP commented: ‘I am very impressed with both the design and the building quality of the Groundwork projects. These include the proposed refurbishment and alley gating of back-streets in Bradley Ward in Nelson. Already up and running is the amazing ‘Offshoots’ project in Towneley Park which showcases sustainable horticulture.” “It is particularly impressive that the projects are based on training young people and giving them skills to get into worthwhile work.” “Recent changes requiring co-operation between the regeneration arms of our local authorities and all the different funding streams mean a £200 million pot is available for investment. We have got to make sure this government money is distributed fairly across East Lancashire. I will be discussing the new funding arrangements with Max Steinberg, Chief Executive of Pennine Lancashire, when I meet him in December.” |
