PoliticsHome www.politicshome.com has been sold to Conservative Vice Chairman, Lord Ashcroft, prompting the immediate resignation of Andrew Rawnsley as editor-in-chief. Described by the Times as a “grassroots voice of political comment” the website has built a reputation for impartiality. But now Andrew Rawnsley, the Observer’s political commentator, says he fears for its independence. Speaking from Nelson earlier today, Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, said; “The Times was absolutely spot on to raise questions about how the website will report Lord Ashcroft and his activities.” “Although he is based in Belize, he is an active player in British politics and is masterminding the Conservatives’ marginal seats campaign which is targeting my own Pendle constituency.” “The Times asks if the site will be willing, in future, to challenge the target seat campaign or to question Lord Ashcroft’s tax affairs if they become a hot political topic.” The MP added; “I expect to hear from the Information Commissioner next month on my Freedom of Information request concerning the events leading to Michael Ashcroft’s elevation to the peerage in 2000.” “According to Number 10 Downing Street, Ashcroft gave a clear and unequivocal undertaking that he would bring his tax affairs on shore and pay UK taxes. We still don’t know if that is, indeed, the case.” “I want to know to whom he gave that assurance and what form it took. I have been waiting since March 2008 for answers to these questions.” Last month the prime minister of Belize launched a blistering attack on Ashcroft. He told its Parliament that Lord Ashcroft had "subjugated an entire nation" through his widespread business interests in the country. ends |
