Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, attended the first celebration of Armed Forces Day, held at the cenotaph in Barrowford on Saturday (27th June). The MP joined civic dignitaries, veterans, cadets and members of the public in a special “Drumhead Ceremony” led by local vicar, Rev John Hallows. A makeshift altar of drums piled high provided the focus of the service. Speaking from the constituency office, the Pendle MP said: “The event, and those like it around the country, is designed to raise awareness of the tremendous work our armed forces do to keep us safe and secure and protect our way of life” “It also allows us to pay our respects to the veterans who have fought for our country. I am sure the day will become established in the national calendar, giving everyone the opportunity to celebrate the work of the armed forces.” The MP added: “There are real issues that are now being addressed. There has been a big increase in pay for our military with more going to the foot soldiers, so to speak. And new rights are being given to ex servicemen and women to access social housing. When you are constantly moving around the world from posting to posting, it is hard to get a foot on the housing ladder.” Note to editors:Last year, the pay increase for the lowest ranks increased by 9.3% and across all of the ranks, there was a 3.3% pay rise. |
