What the media says about me...

"Paul Flynn and Gordon Prentice have become this Parliament’s saltiest select committee interrogators. They have been consistent value for money, pulling apart a succession of crooks, con men and blue-sky pseuds."

A UK Pubs Crisis Summit at Westminster tomorrow (Wednesday) will hopefully chart a way to save the great British pub says local MP Gordon Prentice.  It brings togther brewery chiefs, the Campaign for Real Ale and others and pits them against five Government Ministers whose responsibilities cover the drinks industry.

Figures provided by the industry show that two pubs in Pendle have closed their doors to customers since 2005 but the situation is some other places is critical.

Recent figures from the British Beer and Pub Association show that the rate of pub closures in the UK has accelerated to nearly 6 per day.  They say that since the 2008 budget, when the Chancellor introduced the beer tax escalator, 2000 pubs have closed down leading to 20,000 job losses in the industry.

Speaking from Westminster, the Pendle MP commented: "The pub is part of the British way of life and we don't want it to go the way of the proverbial dodo. Many Pendle people have contacted me about the Axe the Beer Tax - Save the Pub" Campaign, saying increasing taxes on beer will spell the end for many pubs which are struggling to survive as it is."

"Peter Morris, the Managing Director of Thwaites Brewery in Blackburn, has told me that sales of beer are at their lowest levels in almost 40 years with latest figures showing a 9% decline during last year alone."
