What the media says about me...

"Gordon Prentice, lean and livid, led the tribunal like a latterday Robespierre. He was perfectly polite but suggested that Sir Hayden was a credulous, bumbling, time-serving, unreliable message boy."

Friday 5 December is Carers Rights Day and Pendle MP Gordon Prentice is supporting the call for better information and advice to be made available to carers.

The MP said: “Figures from the charity Carers UK show there are nearly 6 million carers in the UK and 9,819 in Pendle alone.  Last year there were over three and a half thousand new carers in Pendle, as in many cases these were for short term periods such as looking after a relative who has come out of hospital.”

“But research has shown that nearly three quarters of carers are financially worse off as a result of caring. Many don’t realise that they are entitled to financial help, and some can find it hard to understand the information they are given. They may be missing out on financial support such as Carer’s Allowance or help with Council Tax.”

“That said, the House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee has called for an urgent overhaul of carers’ benefits .  Two thirds of carers are in fuel poverty and half are cutting back on food and heating.“

The National Carers Strategy has set 2018 as the date when no carer should fall into financial hardship because of their caring role. Carers UK wants the government needs to publish a timetable to ensure that this aim is achieved.
