Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, today urged the Government to bring back dog licensing as one way of keeping ferocious animals in check.

The MP spoke out today in the Commons, pressing the Commons business manager, Harriet Harman, to make time for an early debate on the operation and continuing relevance of the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Prentice told MPs the RSPCA had warned of a huge increase in illegal dog fighting. He claimed there had also been an explosion in the number of ferocious dogs on our streets which intimidate people.

Harman promised to consider the issue as a prime candidate for a topical debate in the Commons Chamber.

Speaking after the exchange, the Pendle MP said: "We need to reclaim our streets from fierce and savage dogs."

"Responsible owners have nothing to fear from a system of licensing which would, I hope, involve microchipping every dog with details of the owner."
