Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, today welcomed news that the Monaco based millionaire tax exile, Lord Laidlaw, is to stop donating money to the Conservatives until, says the BBC, "issues over tax are resolved". Laidlaw gave over £100,000 to the Conservatives last year. Speaking from Westminster, the Pendle MP said: "This is welcome news but long overdue. The Conservatives should never have accepted barrow loads of cash from a tax exile. It is totally inappropriate for political parties to get support from people like Laidlaw, living in tax havens." "They should return the money to him rather than gush on about being "extremely grateful" for his support." The Pendle MP has tabled amendments to the Political Parties and Elections Bill, supported by over 150 MPs, which would make it unlawful for UK citizens who are not resident in the UK for tax purposes to give money to political parties. |
