The regeneration of the older areas of Nelson, Brierfield and Colne is vital to improve people’s lives. Regeneration also means better schools for our children and opportunities for businesses, bringing new jobs in good working environments. This Government has provided huge sums of taxpayer’s money to bring neglected and run down areas of our towns back to life. Blackburn, Accrington and Burnley have all benefited from massive investments that have literally transformed the landscape. So what is happening about the regeneration of Pendle? Since the Liberal Democrat administration took control in 2004 not enough progress has been made with the money the Government has made available. It’s all talk and not enough action. Parts of Whitefield in particular have been allowed to fall into almost total disrepair. Whole streets are boarded up, while others have small pockets of residents who have been surrounded by blight for years. Now, disagreements over funding and investment organised by Pendle Council’s regeneration arm mean yet more delay. I share everyone’s disappointment and dismay that so much of what was promised way back in 2003 has failed to materialise. I am talking directly to the Government’s housing renewal body, Elevate, to get work on Whitefield prioritised and to get things moving in other parts of the Borough. Regeneration is vital for Pendle. To follow my discussions with regeneration organisations visit my website at www.gordonprenticemp.com . I will contact you again when things start moving. |
