Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, has ridiculed the decision of the Liberal Democrats to abstain on a crucial vote tonight at Westminster on whether there should be a referendum on the EU (or Lisbon) Treaty.

Speaking from Westminster, the MP said: "The Lib Dem fence sitting is absurd. They say they want a referendum on whether we stay in the EU or leave - but that is not the issue before us. The question is whether we should ratify or reject the EU Treaty."

"The Lib Dem leadership's decision to abstain in the vote tonight is a cynical and desperate attempt to keep their Parliamentary Party together and present a united front.

"It won't work. Some of their front bench spokespeople are determined to vote for a referendum on the EU Treaty."

The MP added: "The EU treaty is not a new EU Constitution. There is no need for a referendum."
