Gordon Prentice has welcomed the news from Health Minister Ann Keen that new NHS training places will be made available to dentistry graduates.

The MP said “The number of people studying dentistry is already growing significantly thanks to the £30 million a year that the Government is investing for increased intake to dental schools. The NHS has over 4,000 more dentists than it did in 1997.

“Now the North West has been chosen as one of five areas for the initial extra training places. coming through in 2009. In two years time new dentists graduating every year will be allocated NHS vocational training places according to where the oral health need is greatest. The vast majority of these are expected to continue to work in the NHS after their training is complete.

“This is good news for the North West and good news for Pendle.

The MP added: “Most dentists are not employed directly by the NHS but choose to contract with it. Dentists have always been able to opt out of the NHS and go private.
